NEWS: Cumberland 250 Celebration - 14 to 16 August, 2009

A reunion of descendants of Loyalists who settled the Remsheg Grant (Wallace and area, Nova Scotia) in the mid 1780s following the American Revolution was held in Wallace, June 28 through 30, 2008, at the Wallace and Area Museum, to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the arrival of the Remsheg Loyalists in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia!

Stamp Collectors: The Loyalist Landing 2008 Society in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, has worked with Canada Post to produce a collectible Picture Postage Stamp. This souvenir of the 225th anniversary of the loyalists’ landing is real postage and will always be valued at the current domestic rate which means that letters up to 30 grams will be delivered to any Canadian address, no matter what the letter rate at the time.

These stamps can be ordered from the Loyalist Landing 2008 Society by E-mail from their web site. The Picture Postage stamp is a self adhesive stamp. Prices: $1.25 each; Keepsake Sheet with 20 Stamps: $30.00; Stamp Sheets (40 stamps): $50.00 (40 x $1.25).

Cumberland 250 Celebration

The Cumberland County Genealogical Society is issuing an invitation to all those who have lived or are currently living in Cumberland County and those who have roots in Cumberland County to celebrate this 250th anniversary.

Celebration central for the weekend of August 14 to 16, 2009 will be the Wandlyn Inn in Amherst, Nova Scotia. A heritage centre with displays by Cumberland County and Eastern New Brunswick museums, heritage and cultural groups and families will be open from noon on Friday to noon on Sunday.

Regional specialists will be presenting background information on the different groups who settled here and the events and people that shaped the County. You can also learn how to find and record family stories. A buffet dinner on Saturday night will be followed by a presentation on DNA use in genealogy by David Lambert, a highly respected genealogist from the New England Historic Genealogical Society with Cumberland County roots.

Bus tours will leave the Wandlyn on Sunday morning August 16, offering three different routes to cover museums, cemeteries and heritage sites along the Fundy shore, the Northumberland shore and into Westmorland County in New Brunswick which was part of the original Cumberland County.

June 20, 2008 - I just received the following message: "Our cottage/house is a moments walk from the Wallace museum and can be available from Thursday-Sunday. There are three bedrooms- six beds but could sleep a few more as two of the beds are doubles. We would rent it for $300 for the week-end.

June 17, 2008 Well, eleven days till many of us meet at Wallace! You can still register by calling the Wallace and Area Museum and indicating the meals and souveniers you want.

Due to the small quantity of stamps ordered, we have decided not to purchase them for the Reunion. However, they can still be obtained through the Shelburne 2008 Loyalist Society. We've added the link to our home page.

Time is flying by - before we know it, the reunion will be taking place. The link to the draft agenda is http://remsheg225.wetpaint.com/page/Agenda. If you can help with entertainment, please let us know.

To make the most of sharing information on your family tree and finding more to add to it, we have left lots of time for you to do research and to meet with other family members. I'll be bringing my tree with me and hope that others do the same.

Do you have old photos or documents to share? We will be able to scan them at the reunion and add them to the web site so distant cousins can also see them. If you have them in digital format already, we could add them now - just attach them and send a note about who are in the photo or relationship to the document (i.e., their mini tree - see http://remsheg225.wetpaint.com/page/Brown+Family+Trees where you'll find mine) and a brief story about them to me by E-mail, and I will add them to the site and provide you with the link. Why wait!

There will be costs related to the reunion. To date, no long-distance telephone charges or costs for mailing - we are doing everything we can to keep costs low, but not everything in life is free, so there will be a registration fee. We are still finalizing costs and looking for more attendees to spread the costs over. I will send everyone a note when the registration form is posted.

Recently I've been asked whether there was a list of individuals buried in the Angevine Cemetery - I haven't found one. If you know of an electronic list of people buried there or in other area cemeteries or a link to a site which has the names, please let me know so I can share it on the Reunion web site.

The Purdy family are holding a reunion in Truro the first weekend in July. According to Elizabeth (Purdy) MacArthur: "We have a Purdy Reunion blog but details of the event and the registration are under development. We have an email account for the reunion as well should anyone wish a personal response. Email purdyreunion@gmail.com; blog purdyreunion.wordpress.com." Is your Remsheg Loyalist family planning a reunion this year other than the Remsheg one? Please let us know so we can add it to the Reunion web site to help spread the word.

Just think - it is less than four months 'til we meet.

Christmas 2007
Merry Christmas to all. My apologies for the lack of changes to the web site.

"The Valley of the Remsheg" is at the printers. Check out how to order your copy at the North Cumberland Historical Society web site http://nchsociety.wetpaint.com/page/VALLEY+OF+THE+REMSHEG%2C+THE. This 3rd addition, a major update of the 2nd edition of 1979, has increased from 265 to 567 pages, including extended information on families and a revised index. The book is hard-covered, 9" x 5 1/2". Our thanks to all those who submitted family information for the update. Talk is already underway for a new book, so if you have family information to share, watch for news on how to submit it.

In reading "Loyalist Trails" UELAC Newsletter 2007-48 Dec. 9, 2007, an E-mail newsletter of the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada, I noted that a William Foster (is this the same man listed in the Remsheg Grant, I wonder) was recently the focus of an "Ancestors in the Attic" program. Hopefully everyone has had a great summer and had the opportunity to meet some relatives and to discuss plans for coming to the reunion. If you think you might be coming and haven't told us yet, please do so.

If you have visited the Cemeteries section before the end of August, you may want to go back for another visit again as we have put new pictures on the Pioneer Cemetery page. We'll happily add photos from other cemeteries in the area if you send them to us as a jpeg file to remsheg225@yahoo.ca.

May News

The meeting on May 14th at the Wallace and Area Museum was a success. Debby Warren gave a slide presentation of reunion activities to date and we had a chance to discuss ideas for the reunionwith members of the Wallace and area communities and from further afield. While in the Wallace area, Debby and I took the opportunity to meet with the Administrator of the local Council, Secretary of the newly formed area Chamber of Commerce, and some business people. On behalf of the Committee, a warm thank you.

Charles Weeks from The Oxford Journal joined us at the Wallace and Area Museum while Debby, Linda, and I looked at the original land survey done by Charles Baker. It is in very rough state and badly in need of restoration, so we were indeed priviledged to be able to look at it. I'm sure that any donations to the Wallace and Area Museum towards its restoration would be greatly appreciated. On the map, the name often transcribed as "Veal" is actually "Neal", so I have chaged the name in the list on the right under "Loyalist Families Granted Land at Remsheg".

In the coming weeks, I will be adding links to area accommodations. If anyone is interested in tenting or parking a trailer or sleeping in a Scout Camp bunk (four bunks to a room with standing room between), we may be able to rent the local Boy Scout Camp with shower and bathrooms and kitchen facilities for a very reasonable rate (between $5 and $10 per person). April News

We're planning an essay-writing contest for students in Wallace, Tatamagouche, and Pugwash schools in the fall. As a first step, we've applied for a grant from the Hbc Foundation - wish us luck. Prizes will be given out during the reunion in 2008 and the winning essays will be published.

On the topic of funding for reunion activities, if you belong to an organization who gives grants or makes donations to charitable organizations such as the Wallace and Area Museum, please contact us with the details. Donations towards the reunion will offset the expenses for the event and reduce the registration fees.

Some new links have been added to the Cemeteries page and more people have been added to the lists of those planning to attend. We are close to 100 names already. Let's make it a real reunion and spread the word to relatives wherever they may live!

For those living in the Wallace, NS, area or farther afield who can come to Wallace for a 7 p.m. meeting, I look forward to meeting you May 14, 2007, at the Wallace and Area Museum to hear your ideas for the reunion - and, yes, we are looking for volunteers!

We have our first volunteer family coordinator - Alan Huestis of Wentworth, NS. Thank you Alan for becoming the contact point for your family.

The most noteworthy news for this month is that the Wallace and Area Museum has taken the reunion on as a project. For the organizing committee, this was great news! It means that charitable receipts (Canadian) can be issued for donations to the project and that they will handle the accounting for revenue and expenses. We look forward to their wise counsel and know we will benefit from the experience of their members in hosting large reunions and other events and their expertise.

To those who submitted information for the web site, thank you so much. In sharing our family stories and information, we all benefit. I expect that there are many of us who are descended from several of the Loyalists who settled at Remsheg.

It's January 28, 2007, about 17 months from the reunion and not even two months since the idea for the reunion was raised. Spread the word and let us know (remsheg225@yahoo.ca) if you are interested in attending. We need your name(s), the family name of the Remsheg Loyalist grantee you are descended from and the name of the child of the Loyalist grantee you are descended from, and where you live.

Let's all work to gather our "cousins" who have spread across North America and beyond. What a gathering it will be! Already we have 38 people planning to come representing the Baxter, Brown, Lefurgey, Purdy, Stevens, Vincent, and Wynn familes. Descendants who are planning to attend the celebration are coming from: Nova Scotia; Prince Edward Island; New Brunswick; Quebec; Alberta; British Columbia; Washington State; California; Colorado; Iowa; Deleware; New York: and Yorkshire, England.

Some of the things being planned for the reunion - a Loyalist military reenactment, a barn dance, games of the 1700s. Do you know of a typical 18th century game or activity our forefathers may have participated in - please let us know.

Want to wear a Loyalist costume, but running out of time to make one - Moirs Costumes & Events in Truro, Nova Scotia, advises me that if you contact them at least a week in advance with your size and what type of outfit you want, they can send you an E-mail with a selection of costumes to chose from. You can order in advance and pick up your outfit in Truro (about 80 km from Wallace towards Halifax). Click on their banner to go to their web site, but don't forget to come back here!

Angevine Cemetery

The Angevine Cemetery on the Six Mile Road outside Wallace, Nova Scotia, is the final resting place of many Angvines. Over the years as people moved away, fewer and fewer people remain to look after the care and upkeep of this cemetery.

Greta Ogilvy and her daughter Frances Dubray have taken on the task of paying to have the cemetery maintained. Funding is purely through donations. Over the years, donations have dwindled to the point where there is little left.

Do you have family buried in the Angevine Cemetery? If you would like to honour their memory by donating funds for the upkeep of the Cemetery, your cheque or money order made payable to Angevine Cemetery can be sent to:

Forshner/Forsner Seekers

Bruce McMullan, blmcmull at shaw dot ca, a 7th generation descendent of Andrew Forshner (b Feb 25, 1750 in Hesse Germany, d. Aug 17, 1830 Wallace Bay, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia, Canada)and Anne Foughts (b. Jun 12, 1750, d Sep 06, 1822 in Wallace Bay. I'm interested in finding out how the Forshners came to America, especially where they came from in Europe, what ship they travelled on etc. etc.. I am willing to exchange any info you might have on the Forshner branch. Send me an email and we can 'do a bit of digging' together.

Established by Samuel de Champlain in Port Royal during the winter of 1606, it is the oldest social club in North America. Each of the original fifteen settlers, in his turn, was appointed Grande Master for a day. It was the Grande Master's responsibility to organize and prepare the evening's fare. Each meal became a contest, with the new Grande Master striving to outdo his predecessor. Today, visitors who spend three days or more in Nova Scotia are eligible for membership.
